Ok, I found out the issue that was affecting me. It wasn't prefs.js, it was a corrupted certificate database. I simply removed ~/.mozilla/firefox/whatever.default/cert8.db and my issue was solved. That being said, the issue at hand in this bug report might be different. I just thought I'd share
