That sounds like the "Window Aperture" desktop effect triggered by
displaying the desktop. (I find it confusing, too. But it can of course
be disabled.)

Well, I've just reinstalled nvidia-331 and its dependencies to recreate
the problem with the nvidia-prime package, and this time my xorg.conf
was left untouched, even after a reboot. This had never been the case
before, so wasn't the case yesterday when I attached the gpu-manager.log
in comment #3.
But why was it renaming/disabling my xorg.conf *every* time X started,
after every logout, after every reboot, when nothing had changed?
Removing nvidia-prime kept that from happening...

I'll post another gpu-manager.log if it happens again, but so far
everything's been fine -- as of some time today. Some people on the
Kubuntu 14.04 pre-release testing forum were having the same problem,
but that forum's locked now that 14.04 is out so I can't tell if
anything changed for them.

Same problem here -- suspend/hibernate have vanished from application
launchers and the "Leave" menu as well as the Power Management settings.
I'm on a desktop and my upower -d output doesn't even have can-suspend
/can-hibernate lines:

Hm. I'm having the problem in spite of pm-utils being installed.

The can-suspend and can-hibernate lines did show after reverting to
upower 0.9.23, but they still said "no" on those 14.04 installations I

For me the only solution was to either start over with a fresh Kubuntu

I had already started over PPA-lessly and with the default upower

The bug "spread" to my netbook a while ago, so now every Kubuntu 14.04

no. Even so, Gnome-Shell and the LightDM login screen still have

While the nvidia-prime package is installed, /etc/X11/xorg.conf is
consistently deactivated by appending the current date to the filename.
