Actually it is an issue if you don't do something to fix it yourself,
it's due to de nVidia drivers, in the repos you find and old version
that causes this problem. If you install the newer version of the driver
it works like a charm.
Other simptoms of outdated drivers are:

It's been happening for a looong loong time.
Any fix yet? Im surprised this is not solved. This bug have other
variants like, in a Compaq C730LA you close and open the lid, and the
screen returns but REally messed UP.
Only way to fix it is hiting ctrl+alt+f6 and ctrl+alt+f7 back.

Probably not. After trying (and failing) to upgrade, I attempted to
install from CDs, and that failed also (some kind of odd thing with
the disk partition utility; it wouldn't put a filesystem on my disk).
So I reinstalled 5.10. Meanwhile, all data from that disk were lost.
