The VM would be using VirtualBox drivers, not NVIDIA - so I don't think
your problem is related!

Yeah, see the bug title. Shutter has not been actively maintained and
Wayland doesn't offer the same way of capturing an images - if there are
ways at all.

That sounds pretty disappointing that you are willing to negatively impact
a lot of users for a completely arbitrary reason as far as the end user is
concerned. The tool isn't great anymore and doesn't work on all setups, but
there are still ways to make it work and removing those ways will not add
Hmm. What I did was load into recovery mode which allowed me to install and
uninstall packages - there I uninstalled lightgdm and ran the suggested
dpkg-config command to setup gdm.

You can also do all of the commands from the rescue mode.
What is concerning is that this major issue is still left untouched. Is
there anything we can do to help?

It either worked then or I booted the wrong kernel. 4.10.0-38 and
today's 4.10.0-39 are not working, so I am back to using in
4.9.45-040945 order to be able to access the machine.

I did - the 4.10.0-38 kernel did the trick. Looks like it has been fixed
in the upcoming release?

I don't see a clear solution that's not a workaround in that bug topic

Public bug reported:
With GDM installed, I cannot get to the Ubuntu login screen - it just
stays black until the monitor eventually shuts off.
The log has this helpful information about a "fail whale":
Oct 23 16:27:10 gooseberry dbus-daemon[3615]: Activating service
name='org.gnome.ScreenSaver'
That did not work for me. I had to uninstall gdm3 completely in order to be
able to even get a login screen up.
