What a horrible change. I just accustomed my mom to looking at the
notification area for a red arrow (update now) or an orange starburst.

Great reply but it's lacking in substance of answering the question. By
experts being able to get it back, I assume you mean downgrading.
What do the non-experts do though? My mother, a non-expert user,
couldn't care less about updates - because she doesn't get on her
computer to update it but do

I did research into this a while ago, and for a program to appear in the
index, it has to have a special note in it's .desktop fine. That is fine
and doable, however, there is no way to regenerate the index (like via
an apt trigger), so the programs don't show up in add/remove.
This also means tha

Hi,
My Ubuntu 7.04 froze completely today. I couldn't move the mouse, press
any keys, in the end I had to forcefully shut it down, losing quite a
bit of work.
I don't know which information to provide to help, other than that I'm
using wireless with ndiswrapper. If there are

It's "firefox %s" in preferred applications, and the "open link with web
browser default" is selected.

I tried sudo synaptic from the command line, but received no error in it
(still got the firefox already running though).
I tried this feature from gedit, and the calculator - so I think this is
just synaptic-specific.

Same problem here, usplash.conf was reporting 1280x1024. I changed it
down to 1024x768, but no deal. I'm on a ThinkPad T40, Radeon 7500.
But, oddly enough, the shutdown splash works. Just not the bootup one...
