As an update, if I start the laptop with the lid closed and the external
monitor attached, it does detect the external monitor resolution
correctly after I've logged into gdm. The resolution at gdm isn't
correct, but once I've logged in it's fine. Not sure if that means this

Turns out my problem was indeed caused by gxine.
I ran xvattr and saw it was set to 180. Set it to 0. Ran gxine, and got
the same color distortion. Ran xvattr again and saw it had been reset to
180. Set it back to 0 and reran xine instead of gxine. Colors all good.

However, when I try this in jaunty, even though I get a password prompt

Confirmed this isn't reproducible on another encfs directory, so it must
be something specific to the directory I'm having problems with (maybe
accidentally deleted a crucial file or something). Have worked around
it.
