Ok, I tried the suggested methods as follows:

* Try using the "recovery mode" option in grub, then "Resume normal boot"
  - Same thing - just stopped loading the gnome session with a light brown
background. Mouse still responsive, but this is the same state as I'm
experiencing normally unless I use the "failsafe session".
* Try using the "recovery mode" option in grub, then drop to a command line and
try launching X via "startx"
  - The option seemed to be to drop to a root shell, so I ran "sudo -u mthaddon
-i" and then ran "startx". This stopped loading with a sort of highly pixelated
black and white background (almost grey because the pixelation was so dense).
* Try disabling compiz (one way is to just chmod a-x /usr/bin/compiz)
  - This didn't change things at all - still getting the gnome session hanging
on load.
* Try creating a new user and log in as that
  - Same again - gnome session hanging on load
* Try switching to the "vesa" driver in xorg.conf
  - I tried two things here. I stopped gdm, and then from a command line tried
to simply alter the "Driver" entry under the "Device" section of xorg.conf.
After this gdm didn't want to start at all. The screen blinked a few times but
eventually just returned me to the command line. After this I tried the same
procedure (after a reboot), but ran "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg"
instead of changing xorg.conf manually. This left me with the same issue as
described above - gnome session failed to load beyond the light brown screen.

Hope there's something useful there amongst that info...

Thanks, Tom
