I have something not cosmetic at all, with all the gutsy menus'texts as
squares, the only place I know that can handle still normal fonts is the
terminal.
If I launch gedit from term, it goes on showing 3 Pango-WARNINGs :
"failed to find shape engine" for script = 'latin' and script = 'common',
I solved my issue, after trying several things gathered on lots of locations,
which did not work :
I just desinstalled pango, then removed all pango-related files under
/usr/local/lib before reinstalling pango...
Let me say that I simply could not believe it !

This might be a duplicate of bug #572550. Taking a tip from comments
there, I removed compiz and compiz-core, and the problem went away.

Accepting that my bug duplicates this one, then it's not specific to the
video driver (mine is an Nvidia GEForce MX 4000).
Removing compiz as Davide suggests fixed it for me also. I'd suspect a
race condition involving compiz and gnome-panel, and perhaps all these
other variables are just things t

As I noted above there is already a bug report for my (nvidia) case. It
got tagged as a duplicate of this one. If the solution will simply be
to turn off compiz for matrox cards, then would someone please remove
this tagging?

I did find the solution awhile back. The computer had an old Turtle Beach
sound card installed that was causing the problem.
Changed it out to a Sound Blaster (Fairly old, don't know the model) It has
worked great from that point on.

This might have something to do with the issue. Here is what I find in
dmesg while attempting to access a drive connected to the hpt370. I see
the same timeout when trying to install grub on the drive. I booted
Ubuntu from the 9.10 i386 install CD live session. The driver the live

Just thought I would point this out... The lspci that was provided
does not show a HPT370 in your configuration. It shows a Silicon Image

AMD 64-bit cpu. This was a new Karmic install not an upgrade.
My first big (very big) mistake was trying to use a front

I just grabbed the latest "proposed" updates and the problem is
