I forgot to check the obvious... This is a regresion in the default installation settings of fontconfig-setup. In all previous versions, bitmap files are *never* included by default, but in Edgy they are. That is, if firefox finds bitmap fonts of the typefaces it wants, it obviously will use them.

Please note that OOo2 *embeds* fonts in the output PDF, which IMHO is the right thing to do and yet it can be turned off in the advanced export settings dialog (File->Export... and select PDF as output, start customizing from there). I'd consider this bug report invalid. OTOH, here is a real bug:
