I experience the same problem. There are no problems when I'm just
browsing the internet, but when downloading updates or using the
Terminal Server Client, the wireless connection is lost.
When the connection is lost, it isn't possible to reconnect. The system
tries to reconnect for a few minutes,
The progress bar moves so I would say there's graphic activity.
How about an option to switch off any progress bars to save cpu/battery?

I have the same problem with my Compal IFL90 with an Nvidia 8600 VGA
card. It freezes on random occasions.It is then impossible to ping the
machine or to SSH to it. It is also impossible to switch to a local text

I can confirm this bug. I believe it is a gtk filechooser bug and has
nothing to do with firefox. I can reproduce this behaviour in gedit and
gimp. This is a really annoying bug, as we're talking about 25s that it
takes to load the file chooser on my workstation (in every Gnome
application!).

No, that is always bugfix #1 for me. I did delete the vnc profile I
currently had before I started your debugging procedure. Maybe it was a

I have a different approach that has temporarily fixed the problem for
me on my Sony Vaio SZ650N. I noticed the problem started after I
disabled /etc/init.d/bluetooth from automatically starting at boot as
well as disabling the bluetooth radio after booting. I checked lsmod

Strangly, there was two ALSA device. If I tried recording with the
first one, I had a crash, but the second one was fine.

Open Volume Control, the microphones (all inputs) are always muted.
- Open Volume control
- Select Recording tab
- All inputs are muted
- Unmute microphone/input
- Close Volume control
- Re-open, and microphone/inputs ar
I have GNOME , but ni nautilus.

Tested it again with Kubuntu Intrepid final live CD (64 bit).
Still no graphics, only text console. Adding a BusID parameter in
xorg.conf doesn't help. log file and output of lspci and lsmod attached.
System: Asus X56Rseries
Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470

I've upgraded some eclipse plugins via the auto updater and now I can't
open eclipse anymore. It opens and dies as soon as the regulat eclipse
workspace is shown.
The reason seems to be a jvm problem.

I don't use kdevelop anymore because my diploma thesis is finished and now I'm
staying away from c++ as far as I can ;-)
(And I won't upgrade to 8.10 until the regular ATI drivers are released)

Doesn't anyone have any ideas/suggestions/requests for more information?
I'm an experienced software engineer, pretty much anything you want me

Hmm. I don't know if this is a user mistake or an Ubuntu specific
problem. But I fail to reproduce this on Debian Sid with aptitude purge
and reinstallation after this. During purge dbconfig-common asks,
weither the database should be removed or not. What did you answer to
that question?

actually I'm good... I was able to get the card to work with sudo
modprobe -i ipw2200. I'm not sure why that driver isn't loading
automatically, but it's not too big of a deal for me.

I had a lockup this morning where the numlock, scroll-lock and "speed"
switch light flashed repeatedly. The system was completely unusable
including the power switch. I had to pull the power and battery to turn
