You haven't changed anything, but the driver used to access your hard
drive has probably changed from ide to lib-ata. This changes the
identifier for the drive. My pata hard drive formally found at /dev/hda
is now /dev/sda. If possible check the dmesg output to see how the drive
is being discovered

Apologies for mistyping the kernel number used in the daily 7/31 ubuntu
desktop cd in my previous comment. It is 2.6.17-5-686.
Both Knot-1 and daily 8/2 Ubuntu alternate installation cd complete
without problems.
I also zeroed the drive, then restored only the ntfs partion using
Acronis TrueImage

The problem was not present in desktop 8/15-16 for [x|k]ubuntu (I tried
all 3). The delay retrieving the partition information is now less than
5 seconds.
I still could not install using the live cd but those were errors
happening later in the install process.

This occurs on a fresh install using http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu
/daily-live/20070923/gutsy-desktop-i386.iso. I reinstalled to minimize
upgrade errors. The kernel update afterwards produces the same oops (and
i
gnome-system-tools sure seems to depend on libgnome*, it's getting
installed along with nautilus and a great deal of gnome.
Fresh installation of xubuntu from gutsy 9/04 livecd, no new packages
installed. package list was updated at 2am CST.

Xubuntu Hardy x86_64 install updated with update-manager at 10am cst on
tuesday 15 January 2008.
I can confirm this problem with both totem-xine and totem-gstreamer
(/usr/bin/totem was a symlink to /etc/alternatives/totem which in turn
was a symlink to /usr/bin/totem-gstreamer). In my opinion eith
I can confirm this on an install from the 20070119 live-cd and a single update
using update manager. Unfortunately I was reporting to a duplicate bug (and
took long enough that I missed the message that it was a duplicate report).

1) I can't use Cltr-Alt-Fn at the login page. Here, the Options->Reboot works.
2) I can't use Cltr-Alt-Fn once logged in. At the desktop, the running man
icon and System->Quit... hang X until Ctrl-Alt-Backspa

from a gdm login screen / logged in session? It's still not working

upgrading to the new LTS.
So this is to confirm this affects the LTS release and I'd like to ask
for it back-ported. :)
