Bah.  I thought I'd checked for udevsettle.  Adding the usual
"/sbin/udevsettle --timeout=60" to init-top/udev fixes the DMRAID setup.

However, the segfaults remain.  Perhaps, instead, related to

> mkdir: cannot create directory: /lib/modules/2.6.22-9-rt/restricted/volatile. 
>  Read-only filesystem.
