I think I may have the same problem with Intrepid. I get random lockups within
about 20 minutes using Ubuntu or Kubuntu 8.10. I can still SSH in to the box
and don't see any errors in the logs. I just swapped out my Radeon 8500 for an
ancient ATI Rage 128 and I've gotten a good 2.5 hours of upt
Further testing with Intrepid gave me random locks, though it is much more
stable than Hardy. Hardy will lock up unattended. Intrepid requires user
activity before it will lock up, and even then it will run for an hour or so.
I tried swapping out my video card, ATI Radeon 8500, with an ATI Rage
Just in case the post above is not clear, I did not get any lockups
using the ATI Rage 128 card. I used each distribution for the specified
amount of time, then rebooted back to my stable Kubuntu 7.04 when I was
finished.

The reason that it won't run from startup is because the OSD is on by
default. OSD needs an X display and tpb dies saying it can't open
display. You would think that it would be as simple as following the
instructions in the manual.

Actually I must have been doing something wrong earlier, the -o off
argument works now. I changed /etc/init.d/tpb so that line 16 is
tpb -c /etc/tpbrc -d
instead of
tpb -d
In /etc/tpbrc I set MIXER ON as I have to use OSS to control the mixer
and I set OSD OFF so that it works on boot.
Nope I stand corrected again. Even if you turn off OSD, it still gives
this error.

I don't know how this can be considered fixed. It is certainly still a
problem in Hardy. I can't really do a RHEL4 install without waiting 10+
minutes for a timeout on an alternate console so I can get in and echo a
command to change the ide settings for a device. That's a pretty hefty

Bryce's suggestion works for me. I put a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04.1 on my
computer (homebuilt with a Gigabyte 7ZXE mobo), added an AGPMode of 2 to
xorg.conf, took the "fail-safe default" values in the BIOS, which set the AGP
speed to 2x. No mysterious hangs in 9 hours of uptime last night.
I think the problem my computer has is definitely the same as Bug #141551

package along with it's requirements. The installation failed with the

I tested the 2.6.24-20-generic kernel and it does not solve my hang.
Interesting tidbit, I could not update the kernel using my ATI 8500 video card.
Not enough uptime. Change to my Rage 128 and viola! No
, hdb and so on.
I attatch /var/log/fsck/checkfs for the corrupt and the OK kernel.
The other attached files
( uname-a.log, version.log, dmesg.log and lspci-vvnn.log )
was generated when I had booted with an OK kernel.
Please tell me if you need more info.

After a fresh install of jaunty alpha5, the test pages of both of my
laser printers have an additioal 18mm offset at the top. A Brother
inkjet still works correctly. When I use
I have to correct myself, I forgot switching to A4 after installing the
old PPD files, they are also showing the same offset with Jaunty. Here
is the Kyocera PPD from my Notebook (Intrepid) which prints correctly
and the Jaunty PPD.Intrepid

Not sure if this helps but this only happens on a reboot. If I shutdown
then restart the sound is OK.

I'm getting the WPA2-Enterprise error as well, with the latest version

I got a hang after 58 minutes of uptime with the Intrepid Alpha 5 Live CD.
I installed openssh server and was able to get the logs and a screenshot of top
running. After the hang, top reports that X takes up 97% of the CPU. Again,

Same issue with Verizon and EVDO. I can connect fine if I setup my own
pppd config file and chat script and run it from the command line.
