My fan behaves exactly as you described with the 1.09 BIOS. It quiets
down sometimes but never goes off completely. Before I upgraded the BIOS
the fan ran at full speed so I hope we're going in the right direction.

$ evolution --force-shutdown
then
$ evolution --component=mail --offline --debug=evolution_debug.txt

and then went online, and the problem seemed to fix itself! This had
been annoying me for 3 day
oduce it at will. Sorry.
I was tinkering with a bridge network interface around the time things
went wrong with evolution. Maybe I did something while evolution was
offline that couldn't be done, and even when it came online again, it
couldn't clear the previous state?

I can confirm cupsd fails to load when /usr/lib is a symlink to another
file system. It reports:
cupsd: error while loading shared libraries: libgnutls.so.26: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory
Perhaps more importantly, 'ldd /usr/sbin/cupsd' reported many libraries

Ditto, gvfs is Gnome-centric and this is an underlying system issue.
The network:/ and smb: protocol in KDEs Dolphin works well enough but
for instance, Amarok doesn't allow music collections to be used via
smb:/ but does handle Samba mounts via mount.cifs. fusesmb also doesn't
do much as it dies
