I was having the same problem (for 8.04), but got past it.
I got the livecd and alternate install ISOs off torrent, burned to CD
and verified the livecd. I initially tried an upgrade of 7.04 using the
alternate
Now i have successfully installed Ubuntu 8.04 as dual boot next to my Windows
XP.
The solution was:
I connected another dvdrw/rom player to my computer and with that other player
there was no problem reading the installation CD!

because when I run nautilus in the console, nautilus creates other
processes and exits in the console right away, and then I can't

Ok, I do it as soon!
Additional, I found out the rule of this issue. I downloaded the file from
internet, via flashgot(Ver: 0.5.97.01) to auto-launch the Gwget(Ver: 0.97). The
Gwget and Gnome-panel crash would occur, if there is any case of below(more
than 80 per):
