Hi All,
I can confirm that as of yesterday (23/4/07) after performing an update
I moved the gdm.conf-custom back to its original place and restarted.
GDM started with original theme page loaded without any issue, it
appears to have been fixed ?

I can also confirm after updating this morning gdm-greeter crashed. Also using
ubuntustudio-gdm-theme
I can also confirm that removing the gdm.conf-custom restored the gdm
greeter for me.

I have been able to catch some info in /var/log/Xorg.1.log saying that X has
experienced a segfault.
This happened when I runned the gnome-display-properties after having connected
an external screen on the vga connector.
