I'm pleased to be able to help - I love my U8.04 but 8.10 is still
unusable. I have kept it fully patched (currently running as
2.6.27-generic with Gnome 2.24.1) but it still mostly fails to boot the

Yes - I have just tried 9.04 (i386) and the grainy 4 colour display
still renders it useless. I guess I'm stuck with 8.04 (lovely, v.

graphics I believe.
Yet on Intrepid I get full screen resolution (1280x800) but what seems
to be about 4 colours (CYMK?) and massive dithering on all displays

Further to your email (22 Feb - I did reply at the time), I still
cannot use even the latest (9.10) version as about 50% of boot-ups fail
resulting in four(?) colour grainy graphics. Repeated hard resets/cold
starts often don't fix it - then the next day maybe it boots fine.

Having let another person use my laptop running Lucid (Beta 1) via
'Guest Session', if that person logs out they then fall straight back
into my (Administrator) area.
Maybe not a technical fault but, but designed unhappiness in an Internet
Cafe situation.

Just upgraded to 17.04 from 16.10 and it's just plain broken (i.e. h/w
restart and/or 'service network-manager-restart' doesn't fix it).
Tried GRUB boot from 14.04 (which I still have on a spare partition) and
all working ok - so we can't blame hardware or ISP problems...

Following the flurry of happy people above I tried 12.04 Daily Build (64
bit / 15Feb) again on my Atom 450 / Centrino -Wireless N1000 netbook and
still minimal connectivity (10s -100s B/s).
However using a Raylink RT 2070 usb dongle (148f:2070) I get 800+kB/s
just fine.

#176 - Yes, as per my post #37 last October. I am still having to run
11.04 if I use the built-in Intel N-1000 hardware, (or boot 12.04 with
USB Raylink, which works great).
Note the N-1000 works fine on G only routers, but I need N turned on to get
coverage around my house.

Steven, the adapter I am using was bought in the 'Value Range' by a UK
supplier (CCLOnline.com) but they explicitly state the 'Value' items are
not manufacturer specific/may change.
I did find on ebay 'Tenda Mini 54m Wireless USB Adapter W541U V2.0'
which looks about right.

Playing around based on #173 I changed my hub from WEP (64bit) to
WPA/WPA2 (PSK) and it works - IT WORKS, IT WORKS
So we are left with
11.04: WEP (64 bit key) = Good, WPA/2 = Good
12.04: WEP (64 bit key) = V Bad (worse than dial-up speeds), WPA/2 = Good
(flat-line 9Mb/s, as per my ADSL

Having run the live 13.04 beta (downloaded 4 Mar, updated 5th) desktop
runs *beautifully* on [AMD] nee ATI Caicos [Radeon HD 6450] with system
graphics reported as 'Gallium 0.4 on AMD CAICOS', but after install the
system hangs at an overscanning (or blank colour) log-on scre
f.y.i. I swapped the ATI Caicos [Radeon HD 6450] card for an Nvidea 8500
and all worked beautifully.
=> ATI ~ it's all your fault ;-) (but works just fine on 12.10 so no
hardware issues I think)

Me too! With my Acer AspireOne/Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 card. Acer
works fine on 11.04 (which I have had to fall back to.)
11.10 works with ethernet (c. 800KiB/s) but 0 - ten's or hundreds of B/s (not
KiB) so totally unusable, tho some connectivity.

I think the problem has come back again. I did a fresh install post
beta 2 (April-07 daily build) on my production partition as my test
partition had been running so well (see my comment 2013-03-16).
Unfortunately the video diver was then broken again.
Now running OK on proprietry AMD accelerato
f.y.i. I think it just got sorted (on my machine anyway) after updating
today. Mark as 'fixed'?

It's still broken! I just installed Precise on my Acer One netbook (
with Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 1000) and connectivity is
unuseable (10's to k's of B/s).
Having found 11.10 unuseable (see #37) last October I rolled back to
11.04 until now. Disappointed 'cus I love 11.10/12.04 on
ps to #140 above, if it helps Thanks. D.

I have an AMD Sempron 3400+, 1.2GB memory + GeForce 6100 nForce 405
'integrated' graphics.
They work well on 11.04 showing Flash Youtube/Iplayer full screen, but
are utterly useless on 11.10, so I have re-installed 11.04 and all is
well again.
Tried both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of 11.10 and la
eMachines netbook driving external monitor at 1360x768. Crash reported
when switching workspaces.
System remained stable and recovered without locking up etc.

Installed b43-fwcutter to get it working.
Now broken with recent upgrades (device not ready (firmware missing)) in

Excuse me if not relevant, but I tried Natty for the 1st time today
(using daily build), and seemed to work OK until I selected hardware
drivers available (Nvidia on AMD64x4 hardware using the 386 iso). On
re-boot system hangs at 'Ubuntu (dot-dot-dot' logo).
Couldn't to a error report 'cus no sys
I tried installing Natty daily build today (8th feb) and on re-boot Grub
didn't find my 'Lucid' OS on sda1 - only offered me the one option
'Natty' in sda5.
Being less technical than some I installed a duplicate 10.04 in sd5 and
hey-presto grub offers me both options 10.04 or 10.04.
