I had a problem in Feisty (still present in Gutsy): my /etc/hdparm/hdparm.conf
wasn't executed at startup. I had to do
sudo update-rc.d hdparm defaults
to make /etc/init.d/hdparm be run at each startup. Don't know if it's a bug,
but when there is a file called /etc/hdparm/hdparm.conf, I expect it
@troycable: What is the result with my method (Feisty package) ?

I've just checked with the last development CD (Karmic): the behavior is
the same. One of the disk is correctly shut down, the other isn't and
warnings are logged.

I did "hdparm -B 127 -S 1 /dev/sd?" and then "hdparm -B 127 -S 20 /dev/sd?",
and now the spindown via "hdparm -Y" is working !! I don't understand why, but
it solved my problem.

CD). I choose the "usb uirt" driver when asked. Then I did the

With patience and lots of efforts I can most times switch to tty1 (certainly
not direct) and press Ctrl-alt-del to restart.

I'm experiencing this problem on a Lenovo x61 tablet.
BUT, I've noticed that the lag depends on the pressure of the pen. If you pen
down on an icon on the desktop and drag it around, it goes really slow right?

I should have mentioned that the backup script goes through all my VM's, and my
ambiguous comment mentions that it went through 3 of the VM's before stalling
on this, the fourth. System is low utilisation for RAM CPU and disk. Proliant
G5 dual chip quad core (no HT)

There is no clear pattern or cause to the problem but when a new song
starts, for example when you click next song, Rhythmbox sometimes
freezes and I have to Alt+F4 before a popup tells me it is not
responding and I must 'force quit' the program.

Disabling tcp window scaling seems to solve my problems also (tested
with copiing iso-files).
as instructed, add: net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling=0 to /etc/sysctl.conf.
If problems return I'll report here that it's not a complete solution.
