it seems that the problem is a leftover configuration, could you check if you
have a "wlan0" interface configured or mentioned at /etc/network/interfaces, if
so, could you please delete it, or change by eth1 and try again.

Does the same happens with other than Desktop and your home directory?, i guess
this is the desirable behaviour with those two shortcuts, since in the desktop
case there isn't much point in having a link pointing to itself, and the home
directory has a gconf key to enable/disable the vi
