got my ATI back.. now, with new flgrx, the problem is gone.
as for nvidia - it is possible that the card itself is corrupted - I had
some problems later even with nv module as described in here

possibly I defined this problem not clearly engouh :)
the biggest problem that I see are these psychedelic colors, similar as in a
link I posted.
with these colors X works for some time, and just later, after undefined time
period, possibly after switching to console and back, freezes.

if using nv or radeonhd drivers, card address (d000) is written into
/proc/mtrr ,
if using flgrx or nvidia - not. could it be that memory overlaps with other
applications?
i.e. this is in <4GB range, and I have 4GB ram..

I've had frequent "gain calibration timeout" messages and cpu frequency
mismanagement (I thought so)..
the problem seems to be easier after I removed a carpet of dust from the
ventilation output :)
i.e. "gain calibration timeout" after that happened just once (in ~3
days), and cpu frequency scal

same in 11.04, with acer aspire 5520g.
in my case, when I turn down or up - statistically it generates more
events to the correct side.. it seems that some noise is added while
turning the wheel. I also checked the events from /dev/input/event4 -
the noisy events are coming from here..

I've tried 6.30.223.141+bdcom-0ubuntu1 and while I could see 5Ghz
networks, both 2.5 and 5Ghz networks were unstable - connections
dropping every 30s or so + ping slow..
Downgraded according to the mentioned instructions to 6.20.155.1+bdcom-
0ubuntu6 and it all works fine again.
