Something needs to be there to multiplex the potential interaction
between multiple parallel boot programs (filesystem checks, cryptsetup
etc.) and the user. That program is plymouth.

An addition to my previous comment (#111): kernel linux-
image-2.6.32-0206322109-generic also freezes when an external display is
connected and the display management software tries to detect monitors
plugged to the laptop.

nvidia-173 driver packages that are currently in Maverick. These are
