Solved the problem. Using the "System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers" application, Ubuntu recommend/installed nVidia driver version 173.14.22. This driver was written by Fred Flintstone, ages ago. I downloaded the current driver package (256.44) from the nVidia website and installed it manually. Everything works great now. I suppose a bug report regarding the correct nVidia driver in in order...
