There is a "kepad" hidden within the normal keys on the aspire one accessible
by pressing the function key.
However the volume keys are the normal arrows up and down and one function key
together with the fn key so i do not think so but i could be wrong.

The boot log shows the filesystem event has been emitted, and that
udevtrigger has stopped; and the initctl output shows that dbus is
running. Those are all the preconditions for starting gdm, so the job
should have stopped - though we don't see this in the boot log because
starting gdm will stop

I had the same exact issue on a Foxconn nt330i NetBox after installing Lucid
final.
Nothing changed after updating the kernel to version 2.6.32-22 yesterday.
So far, the only effect I see is the slowdown in the boot process, everything
else seems to be working.

Then I did what James suggested and ran pulseaudio manually.

installed on my kubuntu karmic, the update process was cancled at 90%, leeding
to a borken system, that I hat to fix by running
apt-get remove openoffice.org-writer2latex
openoffice.
It hangs also my home workstations that has no wifi but radeon chipset
too.

Indeed, that package fixes the file descriptor leak.
By "crashing" I meant running out of file descriptors in the manner
described above -- not SEGV or anything like that.
