I have all the updates applied here and the problem is still happening.
I have seen the problem using both gnome and xfce. Restarting udev
seems to solve the problem until it starts again.

I just found this out from another site.
OpenAL bug in Ubuntu, to fix -
In your home directory
create a text file:
~/.alsoftrc
and add the entry:
[general]
drivers = oss
It fixed my sound problem but now programs and Ubuntu crash randomly.
So I deleted the new file. Back to crashing sound.
@David,
However, there are many scenarios in which respecting permissions is the
proper thing to do. This is the way the system is designed to work, and
any change would require discussion that is beyond the scope of bug
reports. ubuntu-devel-discuss might be more appropriate.

Ubuntu bug 347045 looks like it is a similar error message.
This is for Xubuntu with all the libdvd, decss, and other necessary
codecs installed to play encrypted DVDs.
Opening a terminal window and running "totem dvd://" works fine, running
totem and manually playing the DVD works fine.

In Ubuntu, where upstart is the only supported init implementation,
update-rc.d is not called because the extra symlinks have been shown to
cause boot-time overhead.
even i got the same problem .

After the crash Ubuntu does not start any more (... most load kernel first ...).

Looks serious. Also, I am stuck. No idea how I sho
