Maybe it could be an incompatibility of virtualbox towards compositing window
managers or 3d acceleration in general. Maybe it's specific to nvidia cards? I

I found if I issue shutdown from cmd line and reboot then the sound
settings are preserved. If I logout/shutdown/hit-the-power-button
through the GUI the sound settings are reset to 25% volume, muted for
any user on power-up.

Binary package hint: unixodbc
I can connect and use ANSI databases (sqlite3, psql) with unixodbc in
ubuntu 8.10 and 9.04, but not with unicode driver (e.g. for psql) , it
looks like this requires numerous patches in unixodbc that were done
between 2005 and now. Version 2.2.14
Can you issue the following ommands and attach the resulting log files?
uname -a > uname-a.log
cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
dmesg > dmesg.log
sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

Here is an update. I think this is the correct way to provide the
patch. This patch applies to tsclient_0.150-1ubuntu6 source with all
patches applied. I recommend stealing the printer icon from Ubuntu
themes for this. Also, the patch to configure.in is no longer
necessary, someone already did

Normal system sounds can be heard (logon, buttons, logoff) but any disk
that I rip to my library or attempt to play from the cd can not be
