I own a fujitsu u810 that has a problem using the external display. This
problem has appeared when moving to Jaunty, since the external monitor
was working ok in ubuntu 8.04.
The problem is solved in xf86-video-intel since 2009-0
Using ext4 instead of ntfs didn't change anything.
I installed lm_sensors and it's true that the CPU heats a lot, but stays
within the Intel recommended limit... I will make other tests to check
the temperature theory.

black the network goes down too, however when the screen just freezes, I

I had the same issue and even had randomly gdm crashes because of it.
Here my solution: add the following line to your package manager and install
the thinkfinger updates:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/jon-oberheide/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

Actually /usr/bin/mythfrontend is actually just a script which in turn
launches the mythfrontend executable so as a tempoary fix you can edit
this script to add the line:
export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS="1"
for example (this is not the complete file, only an example)
