lspci and lsusb have nothing to do with the problem, nor does the disk
type or settings.
Most people who have this problem don't have this problem for very long
because they fix it; but you can reproduce the problem on any PC like

It does make sense to have the latest version as the backport. I'm not
sure why you would prefer 1.42 over 1.51. The latest version includes a
large number of bugfixes.
1.42 is no longer in the Ubuntu archive as it has been replaced by 1.51
in Jaunty.

I think I can almost speak for Antti :) There is nothing unclear about
this: libmbca is in main, therefore the Ubuntu translation for it should
be in Rosetta, and there is a problem since it isn't.

Ugh.
The problem here is that if you execve() a binary whose interpreter is
missing, then the kernel just gives you ENOENT. I'm not sure that
dropping in stub interpreters for anything that might need to exist is a
good solution here.
Maybe this would be better fixed at the command-not-found leve
