Finally I replaced my Hitachi/LG GSA-T50N with a Samsung SN-S083B drive.

According to the Intel BIOS manual there seems to be a setting in BIOS
that let's you to choose your SATA mode (Advanced > Drive Configuration
Menu > Configure SATA as) which is by default set to "IDE". Do you have
tried "AHCI" instead?

What is different when you run it as a user and at startup? In both
cases the nvidia drivers aren't loaded yet? You are certain that you
use the same binary in both cases?
