Sry for the double post, forgot to run commands under sudo, and say that
the drive is recognized while running windows XP.
The drive is plugged into the second Sata slot on the motherboard, it goes
through the Sata interface and uses a Sata power cable.

This bug has been around for a long time and is really annoying... any
chance of fixing it? I use Skype and my Plantronics USB headset as my
main telephone, and I've got to deal with this constantly.
While we're at it, there are some other features that would be great to have
with USB headsets:

Leann is right, you probably set your preferences in
/etc/modprobe.d/options to cfg80211 module which has recently been
renamed to lbm_cw_cfg80211
the correct syntax with kernel 2.6.27 backports and 2.6.28 is
options lbm_cw_cfg80211 ieee80211_regdom=JP
you can replace JP with EU or US depending
