I encountered this bug after upgrading from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 (Alpha).
There are different uuids in GRUB's menu.lst and reported by /dev/disk
/by-uuid (and also fstab). I'm not sure what has changed? Maybe the way
kernel generates uuids for disks is different than the one done by grub
updating sc

config file in $HOME/.gnupg named options, instead of gpg.conf, so that
you have to manually select a server everytime you download or upload a
key. If you tell KGpg to search in that same directory, it will

release notes seems highly prudent (not because of the bogus liability
claims here, but just because it's the good thing to do). I would
suggest:

After upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 I encountered the same problem -
slow disk access, it takes long for applications to start. Passing
"nohz=off" option to the kernel fixes the problem (I didn't tried other
solutions).
More info on my hardware: Benq P52 notebook, amd64 turion x2 tl-52, 2 GB

The latest updates to libcanberra (0.6-0ubuntu1) and ubuntu-sounds (0.8)
fix this issue, in that the controls are no longer disabled and the
ubuntu sound theme now appears correctly as a choice of sound theme.
I'm going to file a seperate bug about the window & button sound effects
not working.

Yes, /etc/modules is a file. Just put a line with applesmc in it with a text
editor and the module gets loaded when you boot ubuntu.

I had this problem on kernel 2.6.27.3 but after the update to 2.6.27.4
it seems to have gone away. I'm using the 177 nvidia drivers on a nvidia
mobile 8400gs

I've tried Hardy and the last Intrepid with this chipset. Hardy only works
attaching a lot of parameters in the kernel starting line and yet if you try to
restart X or just switching to another terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F*) the screen hangs
just the same as the Erwin Michel picture. But I could correct
