I just installed alpha4 again, and if I choose safe mode the
installation screen is all garbled but not garbled enough so that I
can't get thru the complete install. After reboot, X boots properly and
I get a 1280x1024 screen that is not garbled, but is not the correct
resolution either.

I have the same problem with a text document with mathematical formulae
added using OpenOffice Maths after exporting it as PDF. I have a

I've installed kernel 2.6.27-2-generic from the Intrepid repo. Seems to run OK.
I've not changed anything else but it means I may not be able to accept
upgrades (except Intrepid). However if this seems to work, and nothing serious
breaks, I am happy to switch to Intrepid in a few days time.

The bug seems to be fixed in recent Ubuntu version. In fact, I don't
know really well the state of the bug, since I don't have access to the
machine very often, but I had no complaints for years about that... It
has probably been fixed since Edgy.

I was right about the driver thing. I've installed 173 again and Firefox
is behaving normally again, so probably it was not a Firefox-bug after
all.

PhotoRec is packaged as part of Testdisk. Even if packaged in the same
source tarball, they provide very different functionalities: partition
recovery vs image files recovery. Could it be moved to a separate
package?
