The Live CD uses the same correct/sensible resolutions for the given CRT in GDM
and Metacity. At least the autoprobeing does the right thing now.
When intrepid is out I'll update and try a dpkg-reconfigure on the affected box.

Same problem on the same Acer model: Acer Aspire 5024
dmesg start to get filled with this error and eventualy system
(hard)locks up. I can only move mouse pointer and thats it. No respons

likely to be in control of what framebuffer modes are offered, if this
worked with the same hardware and a different version of Ubuntu.

I think I've found the problem.
Looks like GDM is trying to run X with the nvidia driver and failing:
(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not
found)
This is when using the xorg failsafe configuration.
So I tried using my nvidia xorg.

With the dmask/fmask fix now applied in gdonf-editor, I've verified that
unison-gtk will properly sync files and folders back and forth to a vfat
drive. But the fix only works if all files and folders being synced
