I can confirm this issue ; Ubuntu 8.04 with the default latest updates (kernel
2.6.24-17-generic)
Happened twice so far at seemingly random moments. Suddenly no network
connectivity whatsoever. rmmod && modprobe seems to remedy the problem.

Freepats is not complete, there are sound files missing and it don't
sound so good anyway. But there is a solution: timidi+fluid. If fluid is
to large, maybe fluid could at least be used to complete freepats.

I beleive this is a well-known "feature" in the kernel itself. It
prioritizes file operations.
I can confirm this going on with .tar backups and beleive it's the same
phenomenon. When working with large files, the kernel uses so much
resources that the user interface part becomes sluggish or unr

I upgraded to the latest Hardy kernel packages (linux-
image-2.6.24-17-generic) which seems to have a downgraded e1000 driver
(ver 7.3.20-k2-NAPI). 3 days and counting without a kernel hang, so I
assume this version of the driver doesn't have the ASPM code.

I just managed to reproduce this, by doing exactly the same thing as I
did last time: press 'v' (view source) on a particular email in kmail. I
tried again, going for a different email and it didn't crash. Now,
neither does the email that caused it the first two times. I'll leave

I just wanted to add that I uninstalled VMware workstation 6.0.3, and
installed Server 1.0.4, which is quite old by now, on my AMD64 Hardy
box, and I still have the same problem. So although it's not fair to
say this isn't a VMWare problem, the problem is occuring somewhere
outside VMWare... ie Xo
