I am experiencing the same problem however the default keyring that is
loaded upon login on 8.04 (Hardy) is login.keyring (not default as the
original report states). My install is an upgrade from Feisty so that
may be the cause.

This morning I reinstalled Kubuntu 8.04 to test restarting X against the
loss of sound. After the first post-installation boot, sound was, as
expected, normal. Ctrl-Alt-Bksp and logging back in, sound was retained.

I wasn't about to call it a success yet, but feel much more confident.
I used Dave's "Compiz Fusion Icon" trick to reload the windows manager.

Further to this bug report, although the error was fatal as an error, it
did not leave the system totally unusable. On reboot 8.04 was there with
an error message about loading gnome - a second reboot cured this.
However, it is not possible to get most programs to run from the
desktop. Firefox is O

Hardy messes up the FAT32 partition on my mp3 player. I copy/delete
