The gnome-appearance-properties hangs taking all CPU, looks like if I

For out of the box integration of dovecot sasl and postfix, couple of
changes are needed in dovecot.conf. There are also changes needed in
postfix configuration. Changes are described at

of those files you'll see they end abruptly part way through the XML.
I've found the answer is to `sudo scrollkeeper-rebuilddb -v'. This

The symptoms described in this bug might have multiple causes. I just
noticed that I can lock up my xorg quite repetably by executing a little
GL test program remotely, either tunneled over ssh or not. The mouse
pointer is responsive, but the system does not respont to keyboard and
mouse clicks. Xo

It should work without the hdparm -B 254 workaround. If it doesn't then
you have some other program running that is also accessing the disk
(suggestions have been thunderbird amongst other things). This is one
of those annoying bugs where you have to squash all of them before the
