Yes, the future looks bright. I wouldn't have been so optimistic some months 
ago, but recently AMD/ATI started to release specifications, and they just 
hired the main radeon driver developer to do open-source work with them.

It would help if you open a bug upstream and get into a direct debugging
dialog with the developers. We can also forward bugs, but it's most
efficient when the people seeing the bug also follow up on them.

For testing the newest upstream development, Ubuntu packages are posted
on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XorgOnTheEdge
