Here is the syslog. I wait at least 10 s between each step.
One interesting thing that happen when I tried this was that I got the
small usb-storage disk mounted. This hasn't happened before that I
noticed. But the log is from a later attempt where this didn't happen.
The reason probably being
I do not want to step on any toes but "Triaged" seems inappropriate for
where this is right now. The problems are certainly "confirmed" so I am
going to change that if I have permissions to do so. Please let me know
if this is inappropriate.

Thanks for the advice to apt-get remove network-manager and network-

Applied Andrew's fix. The password is being held in the keyring... (was
doing so even before this fix), but I don't think the information is
being retrieved from the keyring to pass to wpa_supplicant by nm-applet.

note that it appears that the driver is able to detect the VGA monitor.
for some reason, it is not able to use it. It always uses the LVDS and
DVI instead of VGA and DVI. I have tried specifying various combinations
of screens in serverlayout section. This is what I expect it to work
with:

in feisty with vlc 0.8.4 i could drag and drop remote (smb) files from
nautilus into vlc. they would play even without gnome-vfs support (via
smb plugin). this doesn't work anymore in gutsy.

This needs to be fixed in ubufox. Long running operations should be done
outside the UI thread. However this will only be possible after
firefox-3.0 in a reasonable fashion (e.g. using just javascript).

I didn't know it at the time but I had run out of physical memory and
swap memory. Retrying it worked.
