After the updates of today, on stratup I get the same error as in the

today i used GParted a bit again and i've seen that it is also able to access
data on the partitions! (read/write)

I ran into this same problem this morning when I updated my synaptics
driver. I'm running on Gutsy on a Dell inspiron e1405. Uninstalling
the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics causes gnome-settings-daemon to run
just fine. I have never reported a bug before so I'm not sure if I need
to give any more

Actually, --enable-chardet was experimental in 1.2/1.3 release series.
It'll be non-optional in 1.4 though (which hopefully will be in gutsy,
but no promises on getting 1.4 out before Debian freezes begin!). :)

After installing an update to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics that was
added in response to Bug #140485, I am no longer to use any useful
touchpad functions like the side scrollbars or the double-tap for mouse
hold.
