I found a solution!
I found it in a different thread on another board. The problem is
caused when you are trying to install with a pre-existing /boot
partition (perhaps one that has been modified). I was able to get past

It turned out that the disk was fine (I booted the computer with it in the
CD-ROM drive and did an integrity check).
When I first got the error, I found the file with problems, opened it with
file-roller and extracted its contents, and I had no problem with that.
I ended up installing Feisty over

misconfiguration. File from package was overwritten by another file,
causing non functional program in the way program wasn't designed to

Uninstalling all openoffice components and reinstalling openoffice.org

This appears to have been caused by having opera installed (which never
did work). After removing opera and then openoffice ia32 libs I managed
to get an install.
Perhaps not related: I then had to change the driver in xorg.conf from
nvidia to nv, in order for X to start. Still it doesn't get the

I found a solution (works so far) to this problem on my PC.
Earlier, I installed a bunch of apps along with nvidia drivers using
Automatix2. Thats when my reboot problems started occurring. By uninstalling
nvidia through Automatix2, I have regained control of Kubuntu's shutdown/reboot
