I installed kubuntu-desktop and checked it out. The problem remains the
same.
But some more testing:
I cleared my playlist (which previously had all my music files listed),
and the problem went away. Amarok starts almost instantaneously. I don't
know why I didn't try that before.

On kubuntu Feisty the problem still exists. Checking unmounted floppy to
show on the desktop has no effects. To say it is a bug one would have to
know a policy for showing or not showing device icons. For sure desktop
settings are not respected.

Computer is working ok now I ended up doing the following:
Installed a lamp configuration with server install disk
Installed generic kernel due to PAE problem with laptop
Installed ubuntu-desktop
Still had erratic lockups -
Removed powernowd and apmd
Installed powersaved an dependencies

After returning to an old xorg.conf (attached) I can access my machine
but I've noticed that the fonts seem to be lost, even though the
xorg.conf points to the right place...

It turns out that this was just a configuration item that I missed when
I read the debootstrap installation guide. In the guide they do, in
fact, warn you to edit /etc/network/interfaces and add a line for the
loopback device.
OTOH it seems like this file, and a few other files, could be improved

Yes Johnathan, that is the open source ati driver. So I guess this would
be a bug of the driver and not compiz?... Anyone with intel or nvidia
having this problem too??

I can confirm this bug, on the same card. My laptop is an Acer Aspire
3200 with a SiS chipset and Realtek built-in audio. Eugene Gavrilov of
the kX Project seems to have gotten line-in recording working on this
particular card in his 3rd party drivers using knowledge from the ALSA

I concur, downloading and installing ndiswrapper 1.42 from source fixed
WPA problem. Perhaps this version should be used in the repositories.
