This is standard behaviour for linux-source packages and hence is not a
bug.
Installing the kernel source is not really a "newbie" activity and
knowing how to uncompress the file isn't a bad aptitude test before any
kernel modification/compilation is attempted.

I am also unable to associated with a WEP passphrase secured network (with
updates from circa 13/04) with the network manager.

tried 2.6.20-15-generic this morning. Sad to say, it doesn't fix my problem.

I have exactly the same issue with gdm screen. Checked 1280x1024 and
1680x1050 resolutions and in both modes the fonts are too big for login
and password textbox.
