While looking into this i found that this cant be reproduced on feisty
but it occurs everytime on edgy. Im thinking this is a libcairo problem
as it only seems to happen on libcairo2 1.2.4-1ubuntu2 AFAICS.

Confirmed. The unionfs mount doesn't actually need to be performed as
part of the initramfs to cause a kernel hang. Issuing the unionfs mount
on an NFS filesystem in the shell caused my system to hang...

I can confirm such a bug, and it is not neccessarily related to high loads.
We have a dapper NFS server, and 4 dapper clients.
It seems to be introduced between 2.6.15-26.47 and 2.6.15-28.51.
With the -28.51 kernel, we have frequent (every 15-30 mins) lookups
on the clients. The kern.log on the s
While I've only tested this once or twice, I think one of the recent
updates may have fixed the issue for me. Suspend is now much quicker,
just a few seconds on a freshly booted system. I think this is with
kernel 2.6.20-8-generic.

I suspect that patching wine to require the execute bit is doomed to
failure, since frequently the already-installed applications have no
exec bit, sometimes due to the way the filesystem was mounted, etc.

Yup! Creating a symlink from /var/run/.gdm_socket to /tmp/.gdm_socket
solves the problem, indicating that it is indeed the same issue as in

start it, it complains because there is another panel running.

Well crap. I can't reproduce the bug now. I had just un-installed the
VLC plugin last night so I thought maybe that had fixed it, but I re-
installed that and tried again and the video still plays without a crash
now. I don't know what else might have changed since December when I was
