KM: the following are kludgey, disgusting quick workarounds; I wouldn't
deploy this on more than one machine:
$ sudo mv /sbin/shutdown /sbin/real-shutdown
a better way to do that is probably using 'dpkg-divert' somehow. You
could also remove the execute permissions:
$ sudo chmod a-x /sbin/
it should work automatically, no idea why it's not. Is it installed? You can
try getting a backtrace with gdb:
- sudo gdb network-admin

No problem. I understand how it goes (I'm at network engineer, but on
the Windows side of things; Linux is still relatively 'new' to me).

For the record, you can extract the log files from the installer before
rebooting by going back to the installer main menu and selecting "Save
debug logs". Nothing in this bug would render that impossible.

in different partitioner implementations.
In any case, this was recently fixed in Debian, and I've pulled in the
fix:
partman-partitioning (45ubuntu1) feisty; urgency=low
