I can confirm this with Edgy (upgraded from Dapper), and also Fedora
Core 6 (I *think* this was upgraded from FC2, although I'm not 100%
certain about that, I didn't do the install).

This issue look likes its being caused by nvidia 9xxx drivers. That were
never released for dapper try removing the nvidia drivers than finish
the upgrade to Edgy. Use gksu "update-manager -c" to upgrade to Edgy

I had the same problem. I have Beryl 0.1.99.2 and Python 2.5. They were
installed minutes before the crash. I had the same error except that I
was trying to change the keyboard shortcuts for the snow and water
effects. When I went to change them then the window closed and Edgy
tells me that Python
Any idea how long this will take?
(I'm not "are we there yet"-ing, I just don't know how stuff works here.
Is there anything I can do to help?)

Can anyone check if this is still an issue in the newest Feisty kernel
2.6.20? If so, chances are it can be relatively quickly fixed. I don't
think this will qualify for a StableReleaseUpdate for the Edgy kernel by
itself, but if a fix can be identified it can at least be considered.

The in-kernel driver was fixed long ago. Months before edgy was
released. So yes, the feisty kernel is OK.
It's just a pity that edgy released with a broken driver...

It seems related to pango1.0 instead. This behaviour occours in
transition between versions 1.15.3-0ubuntu1 and 1.15.4-0ubuntu1 of
libpango1.0-0.
