Oki. But try System-->Administration-->Printers-->Add printer (Ubuntu will
automatically search for all connected) next time. otherwise:
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo --configure -a
if synaptic hangs! =o)

Clean install of Ubuntu has Synaptic running again, I will watch like a hawk as
I reinstall apps to see if/where the problem reoccurs.
Thank you for your help: I sympathise with you, it is hard to fly like an eagle
when you are surrounded by turkeys (and I guess I'm one of them.)

Not sure if i follow you, the /root/.synaptic directory mostly contain log
files. can't Synaptic find it??
In that case you might try to reinstall Synaptic...
"sudo apt-get install synaptic"

You received this bug notification because you
sudo apt-get did get the updates, and apparently removed the Brother drivers,
but no change in the behaviour of Synaptic.
The root/.synaptic directory it is trying to find IS where it belongs, as you
said it should be: the app is looking in the wrong place.

In those few cases i've got problems with Synaptic (7.10), i have solved it
with:
"sudo apt-get install -f" or "sudo dpkg --configure -a" from terminal.
In Ubuntu 8.04 beta the system solved all peripherals automatic.
Try to find nessesary drivers trough Synaptic if possible.
Best regards...

You can still run
sudo apt-get update
to update your lists and
sudo apt-get upgrade
to update your software, correct?
On searching I found this package:
dcp135clpr
Which is a "transitional" package actually installing this package:
brother-lpr-drivers-extra
Can you try
sudo apt-get remove brother
I am not making myself very clear, sorry.
Yesterday I upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04 Beta - had all sorts of issues (my usual
experience with upgrading the OS). So I did a clean install of 8.04 Beta off a
live CD. Synaptic, Update Manager, and Add/Remove Applications worked fine
until shortly after
I can't say, because I can't get into Synaptic to check! I did install the
Brother drivers via GDebi, but that didn't get the printer going, I did a
compete uninstallation of these via Synaptic, then used the packages available
in Synaptic for the DCP135C.
I do not even know if it was caused by
That's odd... it should be looking in /root, not /home/root
What package did you get for your printer?

I have a similar problem, coincidentally after getting my Printer running with

let an update run via the Update Manager, or run Synaptic from

I don't think you can delete it... only mark it as "Invalid." If
someone runs across it later it can still be used as reference.
