switching while keeping /root and /home was possible in previous
versions, possibly just an if statement gone wrong, think the
alternate installation allowed me to switch, possibly just the desktop
isos which are affected.

using the 32bit desktop 6.10 iso I could not install to a disk already
formated to ext3 containing *only* /root and /home without selecting
the reformat switch.
on my other desktop, I installed the 64bit alternate 6.10 iso under
the same conditions and it worked perfectly.

I'm not sure what's going on here. Could you go through in more detail
what you did?
You had a previous installation of dapper and you wanted to update to
Edgy using the live cd?
You found that it wouldn't let you install over the top of your dapper
installation so you installed using the ubuntu-
