.cobnet, you are right! Sorry, I should have posted back here.
It is still flaky, if I hit Ctl+Alt+F1 to go to a virtual console, I get
a black screen. Or if I restart X, by logout/login it also goes black.
So in those cases and system reboot is required. If X just starts once
and never again -
Hello serrs, this bug doesn't occur any more with Ubuntu 10.10. Perfect

I'm glad to have confirmation from another source. Like I said, a new
vanilla kernel worked around my problem. I suspect this issue goes away
with 10.10 since it will have an even newer kernel.
.cobnet can you test the 10.10 beta?

This bug still remains a problem in Ubuntu 10.04, with all updates
installed: if I add a PCI videocard to my SC440 (it really is PCI and
not PCI Express) than I can't boot: I get grub, then I get a cursor
blinking in the upper left corner and then the system crashes. Just like

Hi serrs,
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from

I'm unsure how I can provide better information. I suspect upstream is
moving forward, and this bug probably doesn't affect many people.
I've found a work around:
- install 10.04 without an addon video card installed
- install 2.6.34 from kernel-ppa
- blacklist radeon
- install an NVidia addo

2.6.34-020634 does not boot.
2.6.33-02063304 boots to console like 3303 did.
I'd like to know how to blacklist the ATI ES1000 or give this bug report
better debug output. When 2.6.33 boots the first thing it says is there
is a PCI address space collision. I'll attach
I'd love to disable it but it appears there is no BIOS option to do so.
We have several of these and atleast one needs to have DVI out from an
addon video card.
Also note, the integrated + addon have no problems with 9.04 and I
believe 8.10 and 9.10 also.

The ATI ES1000 seems to be an old server graphics chip. What happens
when you disable it in the BIOS on a system that has an addon PCI video
card?
