I can confirm this issue on an up-to-date installation of Ubuntu Lucid
with and without the ALSA backports module installed. This is probably
related with bug #215586.

After changing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf I can use external mic with skype.
In the same time the quality of recordings using gnome-sound-recorder is awful,
internal mic doesn't work still.

Just few additional information:
1. I tested it on 32bits version and it does not work too
2. adding in the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf the following setting:
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=3 position_fix=1 model=acer
the external microphone (connected to the jack) works.

I have the same problem, the same hardware. When I installed Karmic
Beta, i got the microphone working, changing a bit of things in alsa-
mixer. I don't remember wich beta version it was. Maybe RC1... Then when
I installed the final version, it didn't work anymore... There has been
a downgrade!
