So, what would be better, a fresh install or update? I tried both with
the same results. The machine I'm using now has also had issues with KK.
What I'm using now was originally something I installed as a beta, and
it really screwed up GRUB, so now I have to use SGD to get anything to
work.

Please follow this steps :
- login in a regular gnome session - wait for the crash
- back to the login screen, press ctrl-alt-f1; login
- write this command :
$ cp .xsession-errors xsession-errors.log
$ exit
- come back to login screen with ctrl-alt-f7 and open a fail-safe g

I have this problem, too, on a Microcenter PowerSpec Intel based system.
The builtin card was a problem in the past because Googleearth would not
render properly when effects were used. I had to use "none" for visual
effects.
Now my system locks in 9.10 when choosing Gnome. Failsafe Gnome works
