Hi gltaylor1. Please install "linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic" (then
reboot). The issue originally reported in this bug report has been
resolved by installing this package. Also please ensure there are no
extra "alsa model quirks" in your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
If this does not resolve
@Stefan
If you intend to continue using Karmic, yes, you'll need to keep l-b-m-a-k-g
installed.
Marking fixed in both linux and linux-backports-modules-2.6.31; thanks
for confirming.

I have recently upgraded my HP HDX 9120EA from 9.04 to 9.10 and am
seeing the same problem - following the instructions enables sound. I
will try removing the model number to see if it is just changing the
line jack mode that makes sound work.
Interestingly, I was running Gentoo until a few weeks
Wow crazy, it works without any model. Thank you!
Do I have to keep linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generics installed
or is it going to be merged into the ubuntu kernel?

@slurm no, your issue is completely unrelated (though installing the
newer drivers resolves the issue)
@Stefan Is it completely necessary to specify the model? In other words,

I installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.31-14-generic and tried

version?
The situation remains the same: I get some sound when I unmute the channels and
turn the volume up and change the line jack mode as described abo
We have created a new package which contains the latest alsa. The latest

you please install linux-backports-modules-alsa and retest then report
